UAE Residency Update: Expats Abroad with Expired Visas Can Now Return Without New Permits

The UAE Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) has announced a significant temporary measure for expatriates. Residents currently abroad with expired residency visas can now return to the UAE without applying for a new entry permit.

This update is a welcome relief for those impacted by recent regional flight disruptions and exceptional circumstances. For residents planning their return or exploring long-term residency options in the UAE, consulting experienced business setup consultants in Dubai can help ensure all documentation and compliance requirements are handled smoothly.

What Are the Key Points for Expatriates?

• Eligibility: Applies to residents whose UAE residency expired on or after 28 February 2026 while they were outside the country.

• Timeframe: This grace period is valid from 28 February until 31 March 2026.

• Direct Travel: You can travel back directly using your expired visa and Emirates ID; there is no need to apply for a “return permit.”

• Fines Waived: Financial penalties for overstaying while abroad during this period will be waived.

This proactive step by the UAE government reinforces the nation’s commitment to its resident population during challenging times.

What Residents Should Do After Returning to the UAE

Once you have returned to the UAE, you must visit the ICP or GDRFA to regularise your residency status. You will be required to complete the standard renewal process to ensure your visa and Emirates ID are valid and up to date.
